Great Expectations: Acts of Kindness

‘Great Expectations’, by Charles Dickens, is a story of all manner of human behaviours; it tells of luck, of loyalty, of aspiration, of manipulation, of unrequited love and time and again it tells of the human capacity for kindness.

For me, these acts of kindness begin not with Pip taking a pie and file for the escaping Magwitch (for Pip did this in fear of his life) but when Magwitch is recaptured and falsely confesses to taking the ‘wittles’ and the pie from the blacksmith’s himself. This is why I have illustrated the moments of selflessness I believe to be most interesting on to the surface of a pie.
